The early childhood is the most important developmental stage in human life, with many crucial advancements in the physical, social, cognitive, emotional and linguistic realms taking place within the span of a few years. Experiences during this time may become biologically embedded within a child, potentially influencing his or her lifelong behaviour in a very permanent way.
As a result, the Royal College of Physicians of Canada has issued a Position Statement on Early Child Development. The statement includes 15 steps for governments, educators, professional organizations and health care providers to take to positively influence the development of Canadian children.
Research shows that health promotion and disease prevention programs targeted at adults would be made more effective if actions were taken against them early in life. Because of this, investments in proper education and care, parenting support and poverty reduction yield benefits throughout life. Through the issuing of this position statement, the Royal College hopes to make Canadian communities stronger, improve overall health and reduce various burdens on our healthcare system.
