Six healthy volunteers at the University of Minnesota swallowed one biotin capsule every morning for a week. On the seventh morning, a technician tied off each arm and filled the tubes. The samples went through the same hospital machines that read everyone else's hormones.
The researchers picked the dose on purpose. At 10,000 micrograms, it matched the strength on ordinary drugstore shelves. That includes the jar of hair, skin and nail capsules on her bathroom counter. Several tests came back wrong, in people with nothing wrong with them.
The short answer: high-dose biotin can make some blood tests read falsely high or falsely low, including certain thyroid and heart tests. Tell your doctor you take it, and ask whether to pause it before your next blood test.
Can biotin throw off a thyroid test?
Yes. Many lab machines use biotin as a kind of glue. It sticks the hormone being measured onto a tiny magnetic bead so the machine can count it. When her blood is already flooded with biotin, the glue grabs the wrong things and the count goes sideways.
On a thyroid panel, the mistake can look like an overactive gland. The US National Institutes of Health describes people on biotin who were wrongly told they had Graves' disease. Even a single 10 mg dose has skewed results within a day.
| What the jar seems to promise | Viva verdict |
|---|---|
| Stronger hair and nails in healthy women | A few small studies |
| Regrows thinning hair | Only when levels run low |
| A bigger dose works faster | Never shown |
7:40 a.m., the chair with the armrest
She is in the vinyl chair at the lab, sleeve pushed up, squeezing a foam ball. The fix has to happen before she sits down. Alberta Precision Laboratories runs testing across the province. It asks people on high-dose biotin to stop for 48 hours before a sample is taken.
Health Canada keeps its advice simpler. Talk to your doctor if you take more biotin than adults need from a normal diet. Her capsule holds hundreds of times that amount.
The stakes reach past the thyroid. Troponin, the test emergency doctors use to spot a heart attack, can read too low. Health Canada knows of one patient abroad who died after that error. No serious Canadian cases have been reported.

What a splitting nail is really asking for
Most brittle nails suffer at the sink. Mayo Clinic warns that repeated or long contact with water can split fingernails. Dishwater, long baths and constant hand washing top the suspect list. That cause costs nothing to fix.
Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves for dishes and cleaning. Each time she reaches for hand cream, she can work it into the nails and cuticles as well. Polish remover is the other quiet culprit. Use it less often, and choose one without acetone.
For the cuticles, NOW Sweet Almond Oil is a light, pure oil that absorbs easily. Keep the bottle beside the sink, where the damage happens, and massage a drop into each nail before bed.
If she still wants the capsule after reading the table, NOW Biotin 10,000 mcg is labelled to help the body metabolize proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Take it with one rule attached. The jar can stay on the counter, but it should never come to the lab with her.

Frequently asked questions
Does the biotin in a multivitamin affect lab tests?
Usually not. Health Canada says biotin at the roughly 30 micrograms a day adults need does not generally interfere, and most multivitamins contain about that much. Hair, skin and nail formulas often hold far more, so check the amount on the label.
Which other blood tests can biotin affect?
Beyond heart and thyroid tests, Alberta Precision Laboratories lists the blood pregnancy test, and the US National Institutes of Health adds vitamin D and several other hormone tests. Not every lab's machines are affected, which is why telling the lab matters.
Is high-dose biotin harmful to take?
Biotin itself appears to be very safe. The US National Institutes of Health notes that several studies found no side effects at 10 to 50 mg a day. Its main risk is a misleading lab result, so make sure your doctor knows you take it.
