As any experienced flyer knows, taking a jaunt across the country—or across the world—can wreak havoc on your skin. Often, flying can leave the skin puffy, irritated, and in dire need of some moisture.

Take care of your skin, no matter the altitude, with these pre-boarding tips.

  1. Thoroughly cleanse the face—don’t mist

While many flyers like to spritz their face with water misters, this is actually a huge mistake. Placing water on top of the skin dries the skin out, leaving the skin looking dull and parched. To combat this, gently cleanse the face before flight, preferably with a hydrating face wash. This will keep your face feeling smooth and plump, no matter how long your flight is.

  1. Fly makeup-free

If you’re going to wear makeup on the plane, take it off as soon as you board. Otherwise, take the safe route and fly entirely makeup-free. Plane air makes the skin stressed due to its dry quality, causing acne breakouts, flakiness, and wrinkles. So, skip the foundation and opt for a rich, nourishing moisturizer, instead.

  1. Hydrate thoroughly, both inside and out

Because cabin air is so drying, it is essential to drink water throughout the flight. Moreover, you should arm your skin with a nourishing face oil or moisturizer—preferably, one with rich avocado or rosehip seed oil. This will keep you looking fly, even 35,000 feet above the ground.
