Are Glass Jars a Safe Way To Store Your Food?

Glass jars with metal lids have long been used as a form of safe food packaging, however they’re not foolproof. As these containers make their way from manufacturers to your home, they are susceptible to damages. Consequently, it is extremely important to understand the safety features on this sort of packaging.

The food in glass jars is packaged when hot to create a vacuum seal as the unit cools to room temperature. Due to the tightness of the seal, the metal lid of the jar should appear flat—or even slightly depressed—before it is first opened.

Upon opening the jar, a small popping noise should occur as the vacuum seal breaks. If no sound is heard or if the lid is raised before use, there may be safety or quality issues with the food inside and it should not be consumed.

During your next trip to the grocery store, Health Canada wants you to keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Be sure to carefully examine food packaging. Be aware of the normal appearance of items, and compare those you pick up to the ones on the shelf.
  2. Do not purchase foods in glass jars if the seal is missing or if the jar has been opened, is damaged, or is leaking.
  3. Check the “best before” date printed on products and only buy items that you will use or consume before that date.
  4. When opening a jar for the first time at home, if the seal has been broken or the lid does not appear flat or slightly depressed, do not eat the contents—take the jar back to the store for a replacement.
