Cranberry Gut Power

Nutritional microbiologist David Sela and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Amherst are noting the potential improvements of gut health when consuming the xyloglucans found in cranberries. Xyloglucans, otherwise known as indigestible sugars, are producers of bifidobacteria—a gut compound normally found in breast-fed newborns that’s less detectable in adults. Though the health impacts are uncertain, bifidobacteria is associated with a unique metabolism that may promote beneficial microorganisms.
