DEEP CONDITIONERS FOR HEALTHY LUSTROUS LOCKS
Deep conditioning hair treatments have great health benefits for the scalp and hair, and are especially important in the winter months when the air in our homes can be hot and dry, contributing to dehydrated or damaged locks.
These treatments are for all hair types, and can be used regularly to prevent damage, as well as condition hair when it has already been impacted and could use some extra TLC.
BENEFITS OF DEEP CONDITIONERS
Prevents damage: Deep hair conditioning treatments help treat or prevent all kinds of damage to the hair, including dryness, dullness, split ends, breakage and dandruff. They may also protect your hair from harmful environmental factors.
Restores luster: Hair can lose its shine due to many factors, including colour processing and aging. Deep conditioning your hair helps to restore luster. Look for formulas that specifically mention shine-enhancing in their benefits.
Protects treated hair: The chemicals used to colour hair can do a number on your strands. Deep conditioning protects colour-treated hair by helping to smooth and close the cuticle after colour treatment. Just remember to wait a couple of weeks after colouring your hair before starting deep conditioning, to avoid affecting the new hues of your hair.
Keeps moisture intact: Hot dry air, pollution and chemical based hair products can affect our natural moisture levels, making our scalp dry and hair dull. Deep hair conditioning treatments restore natural moisture levels and contribute to a healthy scalp and hair.
For best effect, consider the following when using deep conditioners:
MORE THAN A DAILY
Don’t try to use your regular conditioner for a deep conditioning treatment. Daily conditioners are fine for re-hydrating hair after shampooing, but are designed to be lightweight and easy to rinse out. Due to the light formulation of daily conditioners, a deep conditioner is helpful to add to your hair routine regularly, especially for damaged or very dry hair. These stronger conditioners, left on the hair for a longer time, allow product to penetrate the hair shaft and work very effectively.
While it won’t hurt to leave your regular conditioner on for a bit longer in the shower, you won’t achieve the same conditioning results that you will from richer deep conditioning formulas.
HEAT IT UP
How often you deep condition depends on your hair, but once a week is often recommended. Most deep conditioners are applied from root to tip, and left on for a few minutes or more, depending on the formulation.
To enhance absorption of the treatment, you can cover your head with a shower cap, or wrap it in a warm towel. The warmth from your scalp will remain on the hair shaft, helping the treatment work, rather than diffusing into the air.
