An estimated 47 million globally have Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is projected to triple by 2050. While there is no cure, new studies have found that the way we eat can help keep our brains more youthful.

As we age, the brain naturally shrinks, and memory loss increases. A new study published in Neurology found that how you eat can make your brain about five years younger.

The Columbia university study looked at 674 people with an average age of 80. The group that ate a Mediterranean diet had heavier brains with more gray and white matter.

Mediterranean diets have lots of fruits, veggies, legumes and grains. They’re low in packaged foods, but allow for indulgences like a glass of wine a day. People in this study also ate more fish and less meat and dairy, which researchers determine to be the two key factors in reducing an aging brain.
