Health Canada has recently updated its advice for parents of young, bottle-fed infants when it comes to their consumption of tap water during blue-green algal blooms.

These blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, produce toxins called microcystins, which may cause liver damage when consumed. This is especially dangerous to formula-fed infants; because they are so physically small, and their water intake is extremely high in relation to their body weight.

As we approach algal bloom season in Canada, the government advises residents to use an alternate source of drinking water—such as bottled water—when preparing infant formula.

Health Canada has also proposed changes to its drinking water guidelines to better protect the general public during these blooms. The recommended changes will be formally reviewed later this year, and any updates will be further shared with Canadians.
