AGE: 35
Occupation: Ultrasound technologist
Health issue: Multiple sclerosis
Health Recommendations: I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in January of 2010 after having an MRI of my brain and spine. Over the last six years, I have had three significant relapses with symptoms including visual disturbances, numbness, loss of strength as well as walking difficulties. My treatments have varied over the years from intramuscular injections to daily capsules. Recently, I underwent an intensive five-day course of intravenous medications to help stop the progression of my disease. I was also instructed to take 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily.
In addition, I take cranberry pills to help prevent urinary tract infections, which are frequent in MS patients.
The Results: MS is not yet curable. However, recent studies are showing promising results in stopping the disease’s progression.
Since MS medications affect the immune system, it is essential for me to get enough sleep, make healthy food choices and live actively. Having a supportive network of family and friends has also been vital in living with this disease. But, most importantly, it has been my faith in God, who not only created and redeemed me, but also sustains me daily with his presence.
