“Microwave ovens heat food unevenly, which means you should take extra precautions when cooking your next meal,” Health Canada warns. “Harmful bacteria can only be killed by proper cooking.”

According to Health Canada, there are approximately 4 million cases of food poisoning in Canada every year, many of these happen due to disregarding of proper food handling and cooking practices.

Health Canada recommends reading all instructions on food packaging to make sure the food is suitable for microwave cooking; cooking food right after defrosting and using a digital thermometer to check the temperature in several of thickest pieces. Remember that all ground beef products should be cooked to 71°C (160°F) and all food mixtures containing poultry, eggs, meat and fish to 74°C (165°F).
