Canadians will soon be able to make smarter nutritional choices for themselves and their families. The Government of Canada recently proposed several initiatives it will be taking in order to help this process along, including changes to nutritional labeling regulations.

These proposed changes aim to assist Canadians in better reading the Nutrition Facts table. Mandated serving sizes for similar foods will ensure that consumers are better equipped to compare nutrient contents within them, and new, easy-to-read ingredient lists will help Canadians to make more informed choices when selecting products.

Moreover, the new labels will make the actual sugar content of food items much more clear, with a proposed added percentage daily value for sugar as well as changes will to the way sugar is listed on labels.

“Our Government is breaking new ground with our proposal on the labeling of sugars on foods sold in Canada,” said the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, at last week’s announcement. “Nowhere else in the world will consumers have the kind of information Canadians will have about the sugars contained in the foods they eat. This information will help them understand how much sugar is in a product, whether it’s a little or a lot of sugar, and where the sugar comes from.”

Canadians will be consulted on the proposed changes for a 75-day comment period, ending on August 26th.
