The Fight Against The American Dental Association Mercury Use In Fillings Continues

Dentists are still using amalgams for fillings that contain mercury, although they are alternatives, and many studies continue to support that this is large problem.

Studies have proven that mercury levels were higher in the blood levels people with several fillings. This conclusion leads to the suggestion that mercury from dental fillings can spill into your bloodstream. Not to mention, those who eat a large amount of seafood already carry high levels of mercury in their bloodstream.

The American Dental Association continues to support the stance that amalgam filling are entirely safe, affordable, and durable. The ADA website shares “It contains a mixture of metals such as silver, copper and tin, in addition to mercury, which binds these components into a hard, stable and safe substance.”

Despite this the World Health Organization (WHO) states how dangerous mercury can be, no matter the amount. The WHO places mercury in the top ten chemicals that’s an issue to public health.

This has been under debate for many years, the study found not only a larger percentage of mercury levels but it was found in its more hazardous form. The WHO states that mercury can lead to “toxic effects on the nervous, digestive and immune systems, and on lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes.” Even though there are non-mercury composites, ADA still does not see amalgam as an issue.

The Canadian Dental Association states on their website that amalgam has minute amounts of mercury and that no harmful effects are known to be caused by the exposure from amalgam fillings.

It pays to be cautious of what material your dentist is going to use next time you get a filling.
