Last week, Health Canada seized three unauthorized health products from S&H Health Foods in Mississauga.
Two of the products, DHEA 25 and Promatrix DHEA 25, all contain DHEA, a controlled drug that can cause higher than normal levels of female and male hormones in the body. This may increase the risk of prostate, breast, ovarian, and other hormone-sensitive cancers, as well as serious cardiovascular disease and changes in fertility and sperm production.
Sport X Ephedrine, the other seized product, contains ephedrine, an alkaloid drug used for aiding in nasal decongestion. People with heart problems, hypertension, thyroid disease, diabetes, enlarged prostate, anxiety, restlessness, glaucoma and pheochromocytoma should steer clear of this substance, as it may aggravate their condition. Ephedrine should also be avoided during pregnancy and lactation.
If you have consumed these products and have experienced any health concerns as a result, consult your doctor. In the future, remember to read the labels of products you buy to verify that they have been assessed by Health Canada for safety, effectiveness and quality. Health products that have been authorized by Health Canada will have an eight-digit Drug Identification Number (DIN), a Homeopathic Medicine Number (DIN-HM) or a Natural Product Number (NPN) on the label.
