The general style of yoga, which incorporates most styles of yoga, is very popular method of exercise and meditation within North America. The practice of this yoga has been assessed on where it falls within the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Heart Association (AHA) has created a set of national physical activity guidelines.

The guidelines are supported by what is considered to be light and moderate intensity. The AHA and ACSM both agree that their guidelines encourage 30 minutes of moderate-intensity on most days of the week.

The study stems from an evaluating published research investigation the calorie cost, and metabolic intensity (METS) if individual yoga poses. Majority of yoga poses would be categorized as light-intensity. This does not discredit the many mental and physical benefits that come with practicing yoga such as strength, balance and flexibility and calming of the mind.
