According to KeVita, a maker of probiotic drinks, your favourite kombucha drink might not be what you expected.
The company recently conducted a study of sugar content in different kombucha brands, and discovered that products from five out of the eight manufacturers it tested contained higher levels of sugar than advertised.
The report found that the majority of the tested products contained more sugar than was stated on their labels by more than 20 per cent. Two brands had an average of 291 per cent and 311 per cent greater than the label amounts.
Kombucha products have been under fire since the summer of 2010, when Whole Foods and other retailers pulled products due to concerns that makers were continuing to ferment the products—thus increasing alcohol levels—past legal levels for non-alcoholic products.
If you enjoy these beverages, ensure that you can trust the brands you are buying from. For more information on the study, click here.
